100th Birthday Celebrations

  • Earnslaw Centenary 100th Birthday Celebrations

As you know - there are two big events coming up in the school calender next year. The Gold 150 celebrations & the Earnslaw's 100th birthday.

Real Journeys have asked us to pass the message below onto our schools - more info will be available in the Summer newsletter - along with all the special education programmes we will be offering for the gold 150 celebrations.

"Real Journeys are celebrating the 100th birthday of the TSS Earnslaw 14th – 22nd October 2012.

This week long event will celebrate the history of the vessel and the community involvement over the last 100years.  Real Journeys will be developing teacher resources to coincide with the events, and the history of the TSS Earnslaw.

More information will be released as they are developed on what will be available, and how they can be accessed.

We will also have special cruises aimed at schools, which will include not only the experience of being on a steamship but actively learning about how the steam ship operates, and the history of the vessel.

Please visit our special TSS Centenary Events website – www.tssearnslaw.co.nz  We will be updating the website regularly as the planning progresses.

If anyone has any questions about the TSS Centenary events, teacher resources, special school group prices to travel on the TSS, or to be a part of the centenary events,

Please contact Rachel Brian, Special Functions Manager, Real Journeys.

Restored Miners' Cottages

Tuesday, 25th October 2011

This Saturday saw the restoration of three of Arrowtown's miners' cottages completed! Many teachers and students have been walked past the buildings over the years and would have noticed not only their decline but also the months, and years, of TLC that has been poured into the buildings to restore them to their heritage roots.

Congratulations members of the Arrowtown Cottages Trust! Your hardwork has been, and will be, appreciated by the thousands of students who walk past those buildings every year to discover more about the lives of early European New Zealanders.

I am totally getting the hang of blogging now - and have found these gems for Geography and Tourism students. Hopefully this will not only help you with your research, but will provide you with a little bit of entertaiment as well!

The first comes from Archives New Zealand and advertises Queenstown along with a number of other New Zealand destinations...

Compare that with the 100% Pure campaign used in the 2000s.
